After World War II ended in 1945, literature about the Adirondacks became much more plentiful. These two cases highlight examples of the periodicals that published poems during the second half of the twentieth century: Cloud Splitter, Ad-i-ron-dac, High Spots, North Country Life and Trailmarker, These magazines featured, in addition to poetry, calendars of local recreational activities, commentary on current events, photographs, and essays on Adirondack history.
The poems in these periodicals concern themselves, for the most part, with the picturesque Adirondack landscape, and almost all of them utilize true rhyme. I deliberately included the poem “Modern Lumbering Needs” because it is not only a good example of the style of poem that would be published in these periodicals, but also because it addresses the issues of conservation and human involvement in deforestation.
