Stoddard’s Northern Monthly, begun in 1906, “represented an attempt by the author of Adirondack guidebooks and photographer of the Adirondack scene to enter the periodical field” (Verner xxviii). Though the magazine was terminated in 1908, lasting only two years, its existence marks the beginning of Adirondack-specific magazines, something that has become increasingly important over the years (i.e. Blueline)
This particular poem, “The Legend of Indian Pass,” is a narrative in which the speaker, an Adirondack guide, tells of his ascent to a cave haunted by a Native American chief. When he tries to steal the ghost’s gold, he is somehow launched from the cave and, though shaken, miraculously survives the fall.
