With the popularization of the Adirondacks after the Civil War, there was a measurable increase in Adirondack tourism. Guides, as described in Rev. Clemmons Shaw’s The Adirondack Guide, often led these tourists on expeditions. However, early naturalists, such as George Washington Sears (Nessmuk), attempted to convince potential visitors to embark on self-guided tours in order to develop a much more personal and unique bond with the Adirondacks (Verner xxii).
