Case 3.5
Bacheller, Irving. "Him an' Me..." Harpers Weekly 48.2503 (1904): 18-9. PER AP2 .H32.
Irving Bacheller, a St. Lawrence University alumnus, is best known for his novel, Eben Holden. This poem, “Him an’ Me,” is further proof of the popularization of the Adirondacks. Harpers Weekly was widely read throughout the United States at the time of the Civil War. Although it dealt mostly with politics, it also included some works of fiction and humor, such as this poem from Bacheller. This is significant to the development of an Adirondack literature because this “story of the ‘Adirondacks’” would have been distributed and read across the country at a time when the popularity of the region was growing. The humorous illustrations make for a visually appealing piece of the exhibition.
