Mother
I take my pencil to write a few words to let you know that I am not hurt but I am pretty tired so you will not expect a long letter.  We had one pretty smart little battle in which I was a pertaker[.]  my Capt was wounded[,] one tent mate killed and one man stood so close that his clothes and rifle touched was wounded[.] our loss in the papers is stated at 225 but it will reach 1500[,] so much for the papers[.] I will not attemped [attempt] to give the particulars to day[.] But there was some pretty sharp hand to hand fighting you can bet on that and be shure to win[.]  we are now on our olo old camp ground that we left jest a week ago this morning[.] I will close and give you the particulars soon[.] This from your son
