Description:
Aerial of campus in 1989, well before the most recent campus building boom. At this time, Brewer Field House (a decade before it became the bookstore) is used for storage, Weeks Field looks underdeveloped and the center of campus seems strangely vacant with no Sullivan Student Center or Johnson Hall of Science.

Appleton Arena

In 1949, a massive effort by students, alumni and friends of the University got underway to construct a modern athletic arena that would provide a comfortable and appropriate venue for hockey and basketball. While under construction, the building was named for SLU Trustee and 1897 alum Charles W. Appleton. The arena opened in January of 1951.

Sykes Residence

Originally named "Men's Residence", this building was indeed the first on-campus dormitory for male students when it opened in 1931. It was financed by donations from Andrew and Richard Mellon, George F. Baker and Owen D. Young.

Gunnison Memorial Chapel

Shortly after the destruction of the "old gym" in 1925, ground was broken on an architectural icon of the University. Named for Dr. Almon Gunnison, President of St. Lawrence from 1899-1914, the chapel was completed in 1926. Most of it's famous stained glass windows were installed in the 1970s and 80s.

Piskor Hall

In the early 1900s, St. Lawrence University administration convinced New York State to establish an agricultural school on campus. In 1909, Cook Hall opened. In 1983, many years after the Agricultural and Technical College (then known as Canton ATC) moved across town, SLU dedicated the building in the name of Frank Piskor, University president from 1969-1981.
