Description:
One of the most auspicious days in St. Lawrence history took place on Oct. 26, 1929 when Nobel Prize-winning chemist Madame Marie Curie came to campus for the dedication of Hepburn Hall of Chemistry. The appearance of the world-famous Curie was arranged by the venerable St. Lawrence trustee Owen D. Young, and occurred some three years after the building construction was complete. Mme. Curie is pictured standing in front, with Mr. Young facing her in the cap and gown. Mrs. Emily Eaton Hepburn, benefactor of the building, is seated at right.

Hepburn Hall
The current government and economics building, is named for Colton-born entrepreneur and philanthropist A. Barton Hepburn (1846-1922), whose name also graces the hospital in Ogdensburg and several local libraries. It was constructed in 1926 thanks to the donation of Hepburn's widow, Emily Eaton Hepburn, and was dedicated three years later by Nobel Prize-winning chemist Mme. Marie Curie.
